HOONING offences such as burn outs, drifting and illegal street racing will soon result in cars being confiscated for much longer periods, and crushed for repeat offenders.

State Cabinet has approved the "toughest anti-hooning laws in Australia" which will be introduced to Parliament in coming weeks.

Police Minister Jack Dempsey said as well as sending a strong message to hoons, the laws would make life easier for police by reducing paperwork associated with the offences.

"If you are caught hooning in your vehicle, for the first offence your car will be confiscated or clamped for three months, and if you are caught again hooning in the next five years, your vehicle will be confiscated," Mr Dempsey said.

"It'll be either taken possession of and possibly sold by the department, or it'll be crushed.

Seeing as how "hooning" isn't a legal term and can mean literally anything, how many people are going to get victimised by coppers having a bad day? How about the little old lady a while ago in the news who was said to be "hooning" when in fact she was just speeding?

I was cautioned a while back after driving the G6E around a roundabout in Bundaberg in the rain, and hit a greasy patch. The rear slid out, the traction control bit, and I corrected it. A copper was at the other entrance to the roundabout and followed me, pulling me over. He cautioned me and said he wouldn't charge me with "hooning", but I had better be careful.

So under the new laws, if he had been in a bad mood, I could have been in a town distant from my home and lost my car for three months. Nice.
