And now that I have seen this, the ANPR has been used in the UK for quite a long time. About time it has finally got here. Police have always had computers in their vehicle to manually check things, but the ANPR is new. No matter what people think on this. ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) is just that 'Automatic'. They don't need to manually do it, like I have seen countless times them doing to me.

We lost our stickers in WA a couple of years back. The reason... cost saving initiative. I could never work out how they could claim a cost saving. We paid for the stickers as part of our rego fees, and they still send out bits of paper every year as a reminder in the mail so the savings seemed negligible. It doesn't make much sense until you consider that since that time the numbers of fines related to unregistered cars has risen. Me thinks what they really meant by cost savings, was revenue increase.... which in effect is the same result. http://www.caradvice.com.au/142634/w...ker-abolition/ Last edited by OZQUAD44; 28-09-2012 at 01:15 AM. |

Besides as long as the 'cost savings' that the transport bodies make go back into road maintenance then i say bring it on. They're never going to reduce rego costs. However Vic has not adopted the stickerless system yet. For people to purely rely on looking at the expiry date on the rego sticker as an indicator of when to pay the rego, and just ignore the rego renewal notice is ludicrous. Besides we're going off topic here. Last edited by Professor Farnsworth; 28-09-2012 at 01:43 AM. |

Did they have to use FPV's? What was wrong with an xr6t with brembos? Seems like a bit of an extravagance to me. If that wasn't bad enough, the rumours of GT's and HSV's sounds ridiculous (similar performance + more noise and more fuel?)
EDIT: at least they're buying Australian. Otherwise, I would argue that an STI or Evo stops and turns better. But seriously what are these cars for? Don't they have a chopper? How far is a stolen WRX going to get in traffic? Also, saw a Golf R that looked like it had an officer driving it. Was parked ob the side of the road near Campbelltown if anyone can confirm this? I laughed when he supplied me with this story and asked if he felt like a dog which had just moved house.... opposite the bus depot. He agreed he didn't know which one to chase. Another mate driving a company assigned vehicle was pulled over on his way to the airport and told the vehicle was unregistered and copped a fine, lost points etc. He came back and raged at the 'office vomit' who defended herself mightily waving a transport department receipt. It took two days to get the Transport mob to admit they hadn't processed the rego correctly and another three weeks for the rozzors to withdraw the ticket.

Apart from that it is psycological more than anything. For the same reason they have a 40 cal handgun, handcuffs, taser and baton in full view at all times. Having the Highway patrol vehicles as F6/GT/HSV etc sends a message to the idiots that "you will lose" whereas there are many superheroes who reckon their "e series VLturbo R32 GTS" is fully hecktic and can thrash an SS/XR6. I can understand your personal annoyance. I was not impressed when I had my F6 and the police suddenly started driving them. Still at least FPV are selling cars........ |

as vehicle owners it is our responsibility to keep out cars registered. there are many ways we can manage this, diary, planner, vehicle spreadsheets, databases, reminder set in mobile phones, renewal notice for both rego and CTP . I feel uneasy sharing the road with someone who lacks the inteligence to keep their rego up to date using the simple means above if the lack the presence of mind for this simple task maybe they lack the presence of mind to drive in a safe manner.

I was at eastern creek for the races a few weeks ago and they had one of these on display and I was talking to the sergeant (or whatever they call them, he was one of the important ones anyway), and he was saying that they might have already used this recognition technology before, it was very limited. These new ones have 6+ detectors on the car so basically every single vehicles will be scanned (they scan heaps of cars every second)
They also have a reflective strip along the roof line that once headlights shine on them, its a bright white strip These have been on the road for numerous weeks though. I was warned to back off by one the other week. When they are behind you, you can't see any of the decals, you can't see the light bar because it blends into the car, and you now struggle to see all the gear on the dash (blends in with the interior) The thing we these cars, is if you don't break the law, you won't have any problems, thats the extent of it Also, if you look into the costs of rego stickers and the cost of sending a letter out, there is a signifcant cost saving

For one I think it's a good thing that they are using aussie built supercars. Might encourage some people to stop looking at the Falcon as a taxi and buy some for themselves.

I wonder when they're going to be using some of these beasts in QLD. I have yet to see a HSV or FPV highway patrol here.

The size of the projectile is 0.400 inch and when the word calibre is used the decimal point and the unit inch are implied. 40cal = 10mm. It gets very complicated as several different standards have been merged. e.g. 9mm kurz is smaller than 9mm Para which is the same as 357sig and 38SC but smaller than 357mag which is the same as 38spec. Last time I checked all states except Tas were using 40SW handguns (SW stands for Smith & Wesson not short and weak). Tas use(d) 9mm Para. QLD issue Glock 22 40SW to GD & HP etc with CIB and their ilk issued with mostly Glock 23 and Glock 27 which are also 40SW. NSW are the same, other states either use some of those or another handgun is the same calibre e.g. SAPOL use Smith & Wesson M&P. |

In any case, good to see 'Police Force', instead of 'Police Service' on the car.

The 9mm Para round was considered for replacement for the 38 special used in their previous Ruger revolvers but was found to be not suitable. 40SW was the chosen calibre. I know this because I had the contract to supply spare magazines for many years. But getting back to the cars. There are at least 4 HSVs and a number of FPVs in QPOL and have been so for at least 6 years. |

I see a few fg gts and f6s that "look like cops" with hidden flashing lights like the above orange gt etc, but they often are not! You will find they are the managers of security companies.
