LTD, that volvo is funny, but still looks like you'd live lol
Sorry mate, that's what I meant; the thing actually survived the home made crash lab.

Here's another Volvo, the new S80. This is what cars should be able to do.

Some of those results are just disgusting. How can the people working at these car companies live with themselves?

I know its not footage, but here is a pic of our AU XR8 which drove straight into a pole at 100kmh. Occupant uninjured except for chipped tooth, sore knee and bruised shoulder and was able to climb out of the car and wait for the accident crew.

Looks like the best on the web.

Here's the small S40 - that looks great also. Doors are perfect as is cabin.

Compare thse two cars to the Chinese test. It's scary.

I hope Ford is borrowing a lot of the Volvo technology in their new generation car's here and OS.

I bet Ford will get a 5 start result with Orion. If they do they need to make sure EVERYONE knows.

Beautiful. Barely a ripple in the cabin area, unlike the Chinese slop that crumpled like a can.

Considering more and more manufacturers are likely to produce cars out of China, I hope this isn't a trend to come.

Never mind the Chinese. The VP Commodore got one star - "93% chance of life threatening injury", certain driver death as low as a 56kph head on. But Holden never did a recall on the seatbelts that were part of the problem. Any industry has dodgy manufacturers but the real problem here is that the Federal Govt lets vehicles with dodgy safety credentials through onto the market. That is the real crime.

Dangerous childrens toys - banned straight away. Dangerous cars - what?????

They already have in the USA, the Taurus scores a 5 star rating for frontal impact and a 5 star rating for side impact. For years ford has been borrowing technology from other companies under its umbrella, like the control blade suspension on BA and its link to Jaguar. ZF gearbox and link to Aston Martin, Jaguar, and Range Rover (all big customers of ZF box allowing Ford Aus to buy it at a discount even though only in small numbers).
Some of the crumple zones in the falcon are borrowed from Volvo (Soft material, Harder, Harder and Harder again) in order to keep interior safety cell intact. Gotta love the ford parts bin for innovation; wonder what Orion will bring?

At least Scruby would be happy! In a pedestrain/car accident the pedestrian would probably come off better than the occupants of the car!!

Here's one of the U.S.'s best sellers. You really do get what you pay for. Jesse James pulled one of these down for one of his Monster Garage episodes. When he saw how little they could carry in the tray without flexing he was scathing. And I know he's pro USA autos!

Typical van safety. Use the driver's legs as a crumple zone.

We have two winners, the VW van and the crumpledoore. My God, how on earth were those things ever legal? I particularly love how the crumpledoore's back window also smashes, great safety innovation that. No wonder the emergency service guys bag holden out for safety.

That is just insane.

How did Holden ever get away with unleashing these things on the public. Surely they could have been charged with something under some consumer protection law or another?

Why was there no major media exposure and outcry about this? It's downright criminal.

aparently that wasnt an actual crash test, according to this no car would srvive...

Quote:
This was a demo of the capabilities of a newly installed crash test system, NOT of the VW T3 they crashed. Note the lack of dummies, absence of timing marks on the vehicle. That junker T3 was a rusted out 20 year old German highway department service carrying 2000kg in the bed and slammed into a concrete wall at 100kmh. NO car would survive that impact.

Actually, as it was stated in the comment on the video, it was a test of the block. The van was loaded with ballast then driven into the block at about twice the normal speed. I belive it was actually a VW test. The is a photo going around of a similar model van having a headon crash with a Volvo 740 wagon. The passenger compartment of the VW survived fairly intact, you would be in a wheelchair but would be alive.
Oh yeah, the VW Polo sedan which was available here for a short time was made in China. It pasted the same crash standards as other Polos.

The reason for that is that it's a VW. They have an internal standard of quality that all their factories adhere to. Chinese manufacutrers clearly don't.

The key is engineering and design NOT where it's made (providing the welds aren't all faulty).

If the chinese learn how to engineer a safe car, rather than produce one that looks ok, they will get a much better crash result.

I think that'll happen sometime soon.....

I recall watching that same footage years ago in a documentary on road safety, IIRC this particular test was done at 100km/h. I doubt there would be too many vehicles of this era which would have fared any better.

I agree with you there. I don't mean in the next 10. I am looking more at the next 20 years. The Chinese will eventually develop a car that will be cheap, reasonably reliable and quite comfortable. I do not expect much power or responsiveness, meaning their greatest rival will be the Toyota Camry.
