My AU at an indicated 100 is doing 95, the Kia at an indicated 100 is doing 98. I know this as i've used GPS to ascertain my actual speed since 2004. Those with shonky/old/uncertain ideas about their speedos should spend $98 and buy a GPS which will tell you. Just remember to gauge the speed while on a flat road, with clear sky, or you'll get a skewed reading.
Eastlink is notorious, it's one of my local roads and is full of clueless idiots, but then so is every road in Melbourne. It's out of control now. I don't know why it is but we have to avoid two or more accidents a day, and 90% of the time, it's a freaking camry. WHY IS THIS. Anyway good idea, it's been a problem for a long time. |

The keep left rule needs to be enforced more.
Hell ... the governments should push it ... they'd get more revenue out of it than "speeding" drivers. Most mornings after nightshift ... I can drive home in the left lane of the M4 heading west and overtake every vehicle without having to leave my lane.

I thought this rule was only limited to 2 lane highways over 80 Kp/h, and is only applicable in uncongested traffic.

i kept left on the monash last night and passed plenty, and i was just under the speed limit.
and as already stated, this crackdown is only happening in the city of cardinia. if it is a success other municipalities may do the same. idiots. its the main cause of road rage and its enforceable. but it doesnt look good to the do-gooders to say 300 booked overnight for going too slow.....

Edit: Although they didn't really have much choice in that case, at least they're now duplicating it and making it 2-way.

Trouble is it is hard to build a "keep left" camera, a "using mobile phone" camera, a "failed to indicate" camera, an "incorrect indication on round-a-bout" camera, a "moving to the right before turning left" camera, an "accelerating while being overtaken" camera, a "travelling 70 in an 80 zone, and then 70 in a 60 zone" camera or a "travelling at 105 in a 100k zone with an overtaking lane, and then travelling at 90k in a single lane 100 zone" camera. Hey, I reckon then might need to give up on the cameras completely and start focusing on real safety ! |

the only place where a right hand exit makes sense is for the clem7 tunnel on the southern side (heading towards gympie road) anything else i've seen just doesn't make sense as to why they would do it that way.

On all roads where this is enforced, they need to have a sign stating "Keep Left unless Overtaking" on every pole that has the speed limit sign also. This would help bring it to peoples attention, as we all spend time looking at the speed limit signs and our speedo rather than the traffic, right?

Right Lane Hogs, along with Politicians and Lawyers, should be "first against the wall when the revolution comes", (as written by the late Douglas Adams).
I don't care if they "think" they are driving at 100km/h or not, it's common curtesy to "keep left unless overtaking". There's even great big signs plastered all over the the place on multi lane highways and overtaking lanes and some people just don't get it! Personnaly, I think Mr Plod should be able to take to these people with a Telephone book, just like in the old days!!!! And no I don't speed, but I do sit on the speed limit (GPS and distance verified) and I don't sit in the right lane!

It's why I stay in that middle lane on the expressway, which is technically not keeping left. The other issue with using that far left lane is that you often come across trucks down to 60km going up that hill and because everyone is so far up each others ***, there is no safe gap to move into the middle lane to overtake, and no-one is prepared to create such a gap in the middle lane. That's why that far left lane is usually un-congested. If people weren't so selfish on the road, traffic would flow so much better.

The AU I had was about 5 kph out (as mentioned a few posts back), the BA about 3 kph at 100kph. Perhaps yours was a bit more out than normal due to replacement tyres, since different brands and types have slightly different rolling diameters even though the size might be the same. But what I was trying to say, is that the big problem with enforcing the rule, is that drivers may think they are doing 100kph, 110 kph etc when passing vehicles, but they might be actually travelling much slower, which is a big frustration for those behind knowing they can legally go faster. I think that the "keep left unless overtaking" sign is not effective and most often goes unnoticed. Since it is law and you can be booked for it the sign should look less innocuous. Perhaps "penalties apply" or " Penalty $122 and 2 demerit points" or maybe just a red ring around the sign to highlight it like a speed limit sign.
But updating signs with road rule changes is too neglected, for instance the new merging lanes rule here in SA changed some years ago so that the car ahead has right of way and damage to both vehicles is inspected and fault determined according to where the damage is on each vehicle, but the sign still says "left lane ends merge" or something like that when it should say "Zip Merge" We also need the old BP driver tips they were on TV in the late 70's Education and Attitude is the key in my opinion! Also simple written tests whenever you re-new your Driver's license! |

I think this a by product of fear installed upon the citizens that speeding kills and people don t want lose money to speeding. If the state governments crack on speeding so hard with the latest technology then what do the humble citizens do but to slow down and annoy others that may or may not be doing the right. Get use to it and try not too lose your cool as you are putting yourself and others at risk.

This section of road is a disgrace when you look at the amount of traffic on it. They should block everything off and make people use that new overpass and return it to 100kph. Calder park drive should be the only entry onto the freeway outbound. You have to wonder about the people that get paid to plan this stuff.

There was an RAA poll regarding the most annoying driver habits, it was a large poll with contributions from many different age groups and the results were: 1./ Tail gaiting 2./ Failing to keep left 3./ Failure to use indicators I agree with those people! I'll add one of my own pet hates: 4./ People driving with no lights on in hazardous conditions (a bit off topic though) Last edited by muso; 18-06-2012 at 09:37 PM. |

I have noticed this so many times, its pathetic.
Leaving Newcastle CBD on the Pacific highway towards Charlestown, there is the part where the speed limit rises to 80 and it has KEEP LEFT UNLESS OVERTAKING. I have seen so many people sit in the right lane all the way through the 80 zone up the hill. There is no streets on the right hand side so turning is not an excuse. Then as soon as they get to the top of the hill, the speed drops to 70 another lane opens and there is a street on the right... they move to the left lane. This always when there is not much traffic around. Or at 3am they drive in the right lane metres from oncoming traffic instead of staying in the left lane further away from drunk drivers, people falling asleep and whatever else, driving towards them in the single lane. |

About time they sorted this issue and also drivers doing well under the speed limit on other roads with half a dozen cars behind them....frustrated! They should be next. They need to pull over and let the traffic past if they cannot make at least the speed limit. I wonder if this has much to do with the 'Wipe Off 5' campaign.

Similarly, they should have a blitz fining idiots (particularly van drivers...I don't know why) for sitting right up your *** when you are doing the speed limit, or even over it.
Idiots.
