I agree, they are a great looking machine. The old 90's models look very modern when the headlights and tail lamps are changed to the newer style.

I considered buying a 523i or 528i instead of buying the Fairmont. I went for the Fairmont because the build quality is better... :togo:
Parts are heaps easier to come by and I didn't want to look like a snobby rich kid in a BMW like the other P platers you see. Did not want to be classed with them.

Anyways back to topic, as many have said the AUIII has aged very well.
I also think the first VT Monaro's still look current.

My all time favourite car, 1996 Viper GTS Coupe. The thing is approaching 14 years old now. This would have to be the all timer for me, especially the blue with white racing stripes

I'll never forget seeing the Viper that used run in the Nations Cup with its brakes on fire at Oran Park when I was a kid......It was a red one though, I forget the name of the driver too, but seeing him jump out of the car cool as a cucumber and grab an extinguisher in the post race scrutineering shed was pretty cool to see.

lol that was the early models biggest let down the crap brakes it had. Regardless of what people thought the car held the slalom/lateral G record for a while (according to all US mag tests, 73.5MPH and 1G) and pretty much ran flat/low 12's down the strip. But anyway to me it has a timeless look and I think in 20 years will still look fantastic just like the 60's shelby Cobra

Going against the grain, EA-ED Falc have NOT aged gracefully in my most humble opinion - most, not all, look old and tired. Having said that, the boxcar shape is tough, and one of my favourites.

AUII & III Fairmont/XR/T Series still look modern, and younger than they really are.

Classic beauty goes to the Mustang, E-type and Jensen CV8/Interceptor crowd.

I reckon the key to how well a car has aged is to look at it's rivals.

For example, I'll compare my 1990 EA (already a 2 year old design at this point) with the main rivals of the time.

The EA:

The VN:

Magna:

Camry:

The Magna and Camry look ancient alongside the EA, the VN looks a lot more modern than the other 2 but still looks older than the Ford. With the interiors it's the same story.

“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

That Rolls a page back is incredible, it wouldnt look out of placenext to Holdens Effigy concept. And the the Porsche 911 shape, magic! Well truly a timeless design, love it or hate it.

Re:the EAs rivals, their shapes were dated before they even came out! In 1988 the EA mustve looked so fresh and ultra modern. While the shape still looks nice in '09 the interior looks ancient nowadays (with the VN-VS interior being pre Big-bang)

Spot on! and the windows were frameless as well! If these were out right RWD, they would have been more than a match against the Commodore and Falcon in the 6 cyl class back then. They still look good now imo except for the last one with the ugly bulbous face!

ea90gl's Viper comment - YES! You just can't pin a date (beyond mid 90s of course) on these cars.
